Thomas Lombardo discusses science fiction and the 2020 Coronavirus Crisis.
Dystopian, post-apocalyptic sci fi has been one of the most prolific forms of popular entertainment in recent years. Visions of disintegrating societies, deserted cities, and scattered bands of survivors struggling to salvage the shreds of civilization have horrified and haunted viewers everywhere. Today, in the midst of the great Coronavirus Crisis of 2020, billions worldwide suddenly find themselves living in a surreal and disturbing version of a small screen nightmare.
But this is no zombie apocalypse or alien invasion. Instead, what we are dealing with is a pandemic of fear, confusion, and ignorance in the face of what is in fact a familiar threat as old as humanity itself. As with many fictional disasters, official rhetoric about ‘coming together’ has been met by populations driven apart, and the disastrous fall-out from our failure to deal appropriately with the current crisis will be felt for many years to come. Attempting to eliminate all risk for the sake of stability and safety is anti-evolutionary and can lead only to stasis and stagnation. In the best science fiction stories, however, we can find wisdom to help navigate these troubling times, and in the true meaning of apocalypse – a ‘revelation’ or ‘unveiling’ – find positive growth and transformation for the future of the human race.

In this two-part show, we examine some of the inconsistencies surrounding the official story about so-called COVID-19 and the heavy-handed government response to it. Was crashing the global economy and bankrupting millions of people really an appropriate response to a disease that has thus far killed the equivalent of the population of a large town? We also consider the acquiescent and apathetic public reaction to lockdowns, bans, and other draconian restrictions, and potential future implications for individual freedom. The real pandemic, as it turns out, is fear.
Whether this coronavirus outbreak occurred naturally, was deliberately engineered, or somewhere in between, the powers that be have a habit of never letting a crisis go to waste. Whatever the truth may be, seismic shifts in society are already underway, and in one or more important respects, the lives we once knew may be gone forever. Contemplate how swiftly your lives have become like ‘The Lives of Others’ – nervous curtain twitching, nightly pronouncements from The Party on the tele-broadcast unit, and constant chatter about what is and what is not available at the food distribution centre. Will this Orwellian vision really become the ‘new normal’? As ever, that’s up to us.

Jasun Horsley and I probe some of the darker dimensions of the coronavirus crisis.
For millions of people worldwide, the routines and rhythms of daily life have abruptly been put on hold. Superficially, the story behind it all – that of a raging global pandemic – is simple and straightforward. However, even official accounts vary from day to day and from place to place, as infection and death rates morph and change and so-called experts contradict each other and themselves. In an era of 24/7 news, instantaneous global communications, and self-re-enforcing feedback loops, perhaps this is not so surprising.
But this constantly-changing narrative is driving increasing numbers into cognitive dissonance as they struggle to support beliefs and world-views which are constantly being undermined by discrepancies in their daily diet of government and media pronouncements. Those with the temerity to actually question what is unfolding may find themselves casually dismissed as conspiracy theorists; no thinking allowed, end of debate. However, the speed with which the populace has embraced the possible ‘new normal’ of top-down command and control and swingeing restrictions on personal freedom strongly suggests that what we are witnessing is social engineering on an unprecedented scale. It is the expansion of policies, in place for decades, for which we have been primed by propaganda and popular culture alike.

If anything in these times is not what it at first appears to be, it is the coronavirus crisis. Millions worldwide are struggling to comprehend what is happening, and how the world around them – seemingly so safe, secure, and full of certainties – could have been turned on its head practically overnight. But if your world-view flows only from the gaggle of government, media, corporate, and other trans-global organisations battling to control the narrative, then the present turmoil is simply impossible to fully understand.
Behind the rampant media manipulation, mass hysteria, and the deadliest pandemic of all – fear – the key to the current crisis is more likely to be found in the hidden depths of the human psyche and within the forces that lie beyond. This global panic may well serve as cover for massive wealth transfers, draconian attacks on our freedoms, and unprecedented centralisation of power and authority. However, like it or not, the struggle to survive and preserve the power to shape our own future will require a spiritual dimension.

Dmitry Orlov discusses the danger and opportunity of the 2020 Coronavirus crisis.
”’There is a lot happening in the world all at once right now. The entire planet is rapidly reconfiguring itself. The world is begging for a new post-capitalist, post-industrial order to be born…’ – a quote from Orlov’s latest book The Meat Generation, published before the current crisis kicked off. The large scale, hierarchically-organised, and centrally controlled systems in energy, industry, transport, health, banking, politics – and more – upon which our modern societies depend, have once again proven dangerously unstable and inadequate when faced with serious challenges.
In the case of the current coronavirus meltdown, the real crisis has been the fear, panic, and craven capitulation with which so many have blindly reacted. Theories and speculation abound as to where all of this is taking us and just what a post-coronavirus future may hold. Based on events thus far, however, the wholesale compromise and loss of freedoms of speech, association, assembly, and travel, and the right to choose in health care, appears entirely possible. Whatever happens, a comprehensive return to ‘business as usual’ seems highly unlikely. The planet is indeed being reconfigured, in ways that are only just beginning to make themselves known.

Dave Gardner of World Population Balance asks: Are there too many people on planet Earth?
The very subject of human population is so controversial and even taboo that it is almost impossible to discuss in any meaningful or objective manner. Those who favour population reduction are often cast as Malthusian misanthropists by their opponents, while those who believe that the Earth can easily support current and future population growth are dismissed as naive, irresponsible, and even ecocidal.
Whatever the case, we are facing a maelstrom of serious environmental crises, including climate disruption, species extinction, deforestation, fresh water shortages, and fertile soil depletion. The sheer size of the human enterprise is a major root cause of all these. Have we simply outgrown the planet? Smarter, more sustainable practices are a necessary part of the solution, but we may never solve these crises over the long term without also scaling back the size of our population. But questions remain: Can this be done without coercive or draconian measures? What impact would a smaller population have on the economy and standards of living? Can we learn anything from countries whose populations are already in decline? And, in our consumerist culture of ever greater growth and yet more things and stuff, are we really ready for a new way of being?

James Howard Kunstler and I discuss the current coronavirus crisis and his latest book Living in the Long Emergency: Global Crisis, the Failure of the Futurists, and the Early Adapters Who Are Showing Us the Way Forward.
In his 2005 book, The Long Emergency, Kunstler described the global predicaments that would pitch industrial civilization into political and economic turmoil in the 21st century – the end of affordable oil, climate irregularities, and flagging economic growth, to name a few. Now, he returns with a book that takes an up-close-and-personal approach to how real people are living now – surviving The Long Emergency as it happens.
Living in the Long Emergency could hardly have been published at a more opportune moment, as governments worldwide and billions of citizens grapple with an unprecedented global crisis. Despite constant words of warning from Kunstler and others with a similarly keen sense of history and proclivity for joined-up thinking, we remain woefully unprepared for any disruption to the complex systems on which industrial civilization depends. More likely than not, however, we will eventually emerge blinking into the glaring light of an uncertain new dawn. Whether we then change our ways or simply fall back into our former slow-death spiral remains to be seen.

Jasun Horsley discusses transhumanism and the colonization of space. The talk draws upon Jasun’s book Prisoner of Infinity – UFOs, Social Engineering, and the Psychology of Fragmentation.
Despite the idealism and hope surrounding the first manned space flights and missions to the Moon, in their wake the drive to explore and colonise space seemed to stall, or even regress. Dreams of cities on Mars and beyond appeared to be just that – dreams. Today, however, the space race is on again like never before, with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, and Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic just three of the high-profile companies leading the charge. But what lies behind this flurry of activity? Are the forces driving technological development changing?
Then we have the technologies of transhumanism such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, biotechnology, cybernetics, cloning, mind-machine melding, mind-uploading, and others. The nexus between these and the new space race is highly significant, and not a little sinister. Transcend the body, escape the Earth, achieve immortality among the stars, and all those nasty political, economic, and social problems simply dissolve. But walking away won’t be so easy, especially when our predicament has its origin in the way we think about ourselves, each other, and our place in the world. This entire agenda is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of life, death, and consciousness, a new understanding of which is urgently needed if our species is to survive.

Anthony Peake discusses his book The Hidden Universe – An Investigation Into Non-Human Intelligences.
Since our very beginnings, human beings from all civilisations across the earth have encountered the ‘others’ – intelligent, self-motivated beings that are clearly not human in their origins. Peake offers a comprehensive survey of such otherworldly visitors, from gods, angels, demons and djinn to hobgoblins, poltergeists and ghosts, to UFOs and aliens. This book continues Anthony Peake’s work in developing a completely original model of reality based upon an amalgamation of ancient belief systems, subjective human experiences of the extraordinary, and the latest discoveries of neurology, neurochemistry, quantum mechanics, and cosmology. This model proposes that consciousness, far from being simply an accident of evolution, is the fundamental source of the material universe. It suggests that at its most basic level everything that is seemingly physical is rendered into existence by consciousness.

In his book Ghosts of My Life, Mark Fisher defined hauntology as ”’music and culture that draws from and examines a sense of loss of a post war utopian progressive modernist future that was never quite reached.’ Hauntological music has been described as music that evokes cultural memory and the aesthetics of the past, fixated on ideas of decaying memory and lost futures, and music that explores ideas related to temporal disjunction, retro-futurism, and the persistence of the past. The discussion includes electronic music, space rock, synth pop, vaporwave, and music for film and television.
