In 1974, the BBC broadcast the film Penda’s Fen, leaving audiences mystified and spellbound. “Make no mistake. We had a major work of television last night,” The Times declared the next morning. Written by playwright and classicist David Rudkin and directed by Alan Clarke (Scum, Made in Britain, The Firm), Penda’s Fen follows Stephen, an 18 year-old boy, whose identity, sexuality, and suffocating nationalism unravels through a series of strange visions. Set in the village of Pinvin against the backdrop of the Malvern Hills, the film is an evocation of conflicting forces within England past and present, and most of all, its mystical, ancient pagan past. After its original broadcast, the film vanished into unseen mythic status, with only a single re-broadcast in 1990 sustaining its cult following. With a DVD release in 2016, Penda’s Fen has now become totemic for those interested in England’s deep history, folklore, and landscape.

Recent research in astrology has shown that the discovery of a new planet correlates with the emergence of a new set of influences in individual and collective life. As Greer reveals, the opposite is also true: the demotion of a planet correlates with the decline of a set of influences. Exploring the waxing and waning of planetary influences in astrology, Greer explains in detail how the demotion or proved non-existence of a planet marks the beginning of a roughly 30-year period in which that planet’s influence fades out. He examines several examples of planet demotion, including Ceres, whose influence began to take shape some 30 years before its discovery in 1801 and gradually faded over the three decades following its demotion in the 1850s.

During a long, colourful, and controversial career, Anton Szandor LaVey became best known as the founder of The Church of Satan, which he led until his death in 1997. Although misperceptions regarding Satanism abounded during LaVey’s lifetime, and continue to do so to this day, he was determined to invoke a Satanic archetype in his work, including the name of his organisation. LaVey’s philosophy and that of The Church of Satan railed against mediocrity, conformity, and passivity in a society increasingly pandering to victim mentality, political correctness, and dumbed down culture. A society in which excellence is scorned as elitist, self-reliance as selfish, and in which everyone gets a medal just for showing up.
Instead, LaVey expounded a philosophy of personal freedom, rugged individualism, and responsibility to the responsible. A world in which beauty is celebrated, passions are indulged, and creativity runs riot. LaVey’s influence continues to ripple through the outer reaches of popular culture, and not simply in music, at which LaVey excelled.
